We’ll be in booth #910.

This year our display promises to provide inspiration and ideas for creating your own exciting outdoor room for relaxing and entertaining.

Unusual water displays will offer soothing sounds and a welcome visual treat. There may even be a special secret garden space hidden within the design!

We have met many wonderful people over the many years we have been in business. We get to meet old friends, renewing relationships. We also get to meet a lot the new faces in the landscape and nursery industry. The landscape industry is a very dynamic industry. Over the last several years there has been a lot of changes. The trade show is best place to see what has happened over the last year and gives us an opportunity to prepare for the new season. Overall the mood was upbeat and positive

This spring, at the Garden Fair, we moved a mature, twelve year old pine from the plant nursery at the State Arboretum to fill in a gap in the conifer border surrounding the Arboretum.

How do we do it?

One – Two – Three

1. First we dig a man-sized hole where we want to plant the fully grown tree. We can move tree that are up to fifty feet tall.

2. Then we use the tree spade to dig the pine, root ball and tree, from the plant nursery.

3. Finally, we carefully place the tree in the first hole dug where we want the tree to reside.

We did this as part of a live demonstration for the participants for the Garden Fair. This spring we moved two trees from the dense tree nursery at the Arboretum into a permanent location on the Aboretum grounds.

To kick off the school’s Butterfly Garden project, West Winds Nursery employees came to Thompson to plant the huge oak along with a variety of other trees and bushes that attract butterflies.

Marypat Warter, principal of Thompson Elementary, said her students and her school community are grateful to all who had a hand in creating the beautiful garden. Landscape architect Joseph Sampsell donated a design for the garden, West Winds Nursery donated the trees and bushes, and Ben Rogers, a parent of two Thompson students, was instrumental in making this day come to fruition.

Plans call for the garden to include a stone walk, benches, and possibly an amphitheatre.

Horticulturists and nurserymen have long recommended fall planting, but why is that? People commonly believe that spring is the best time to plant. It is so much fun to plant in the spring when everything is bursting forth with new leaves and flowers. But planting in the fall gets you garden going before others have started.

It is all about the Roots

1. Roots are the foundation of a great garden. The majority of plant root growth takes place in the fall and early spring months. Fall plantings are able to take advantage of the extra time during the winter to spread roots into their new surroundings. When spring arrives and they are ready to start growing, there will already be new roots spreading into the new soil. This head start will result in stronger and more vigorous growth.

Watering is Easier

2. Watering needs during the dormant season are minimal compared to spring installations. New plants will need a deep watering when they are planted. The need for additional watering will vary, but, often, plantings installed from mid-October onward, will need two or three additional watering and that will suffice for the season. Next spring and summer they will require less frequent watering than if they had just been planted.

Plant now for the best selection

3. Choose from the best of the spring and summer grown plant material. The largest sizes and rare plant selections will often sell out before the spring.

Fall is a great time to plant. Selecting the correct plant material is important – we can help with that. So, plant in the fall for larger, more vigorous plants next spring with less work!

Remember the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago !

Acer rubrum

A fantastic choice – you can’t go wrong with this selection !

Adaptability

The red maple is found in woodlands from Newfoundland, Canada to Florida. A very adaptable tree which occurs naturally in a wide variety of growing conditions. It can be found growing in moist bottomlands and dry, rocky slopes.

Shade

The dense, fast growing canopy provides cooling shade and welcome relief during the hot, dog days of summer. Did you know homes shaded by trees have a 10 – 30% savings in air conditioning costs? Click here for the full story

Beauty

The fall color of these trees is spectacular. Incredible reds, oranges and yellows are the hallmark of this tree – especially brilliant and breathtaking when backlit by the sun on a crisp autumn day.

Late February brings forth it’s russet, cinnamon scented blooms. They bring a soft fragrance to the air and a subtle sign to let us know Spring is just around the corner

A few of our Red Maple selections:

‘Autumn Blaze’ – Superb orange/red long lasting fall color, drought tolerance and fast growth are special attributes of this Silver Maple/Red Maple hybrid.

‘Brandywine’ – Dark purple/red long lasting fall color, columnar grower, resistant to leaf hopper

‘October Glory’ – Glorious dark red fall foliage display very late in the season. Often still showing color around Thanksgiving.

‘Red Sunset’ – This and October Glory are perhaps the most popular cultivars. Very uniform pyramidal crown with midseason orange to red fall color.

‘Somerset’ – A male cultivar (no seed helicopters!) with dark red autumn color late in the fall.
