Blandy is located one mile east of the Waterloo intersection of Route 340 and Route 50/17 near Boyce, VA.  Blandy is approximately 15 minutes from Winchester, two hours from Charlottesville and one and a half hours from Washington D.C.  The main entrance is located on Route 50/17.

West Winds Nursery Wins the Prestigious Technical Landscape Award at the 22nd Leesburg, Virginia Flower and Garden Festival

West Winds Nursery LLC, the parent company of Shade Tree Farm, was recognized with the Outstanding Technical Craftsmanship Award at the 22nd Annual Leesburg, Virginia Flower and Garden Festival this past weekend. The judges recognized West Winds Nursery’s landscape display because of the realistic use of flowers, plants, unique pergola and the flow of natural elements.  The exhibit was one which could be envisioned in one’s own property.  Additionally, the judges commented on  exceptional attention to detail found in the West Winds Nursery’s landscape exhibit.

“We are very proud to receive this recognition,” said Philip Klene, the owner of West Winds Nursery. ” Last year and the year before we were awarded first place. It is great to know our efforts in creating memorable landscapes are appreciated by the judges, the public and our customers. Many of our customers stopped by simply to say hello and to see what we came up with this year for the landscape exhibit.”

West Winds Nursery, located in Sudley Springs, Virginia has been creating and installing distinctive landscapes since 1981. The festival has been recognized both nationally and internationally. On a national level as the Gold Medal Award for Excellence by the National Recreation and Parks Association. The Festival has received the International Festival and Events Association Pinnacle Awards for Marketing.

Come out and visit us at the 22nd Annual Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival on April 21 and 22.  The streets of Old Towne Leesburg get shut down for this weekend event.  It makes for a great weekend outing with the family, with activities for the little ones.

The past two years our parent company West Winds Nursery won 1st place in the Flower and Garden Landscape Competition.

Set-up for the competition starts at 6 pm on Friday night and will be completed by opening time on April 22 at 10 am.  It makes for a very eventfull night for our workers.

Okame Cherry

Prunus campanulata x incisa ‘Okame’

Spring’s arrival is announced in grand fashion with this early blooming Cherry.  These breathtaking blossoms bring out the spring fever in our winter weary souls!

A grove of these trees is a wonderful sight to see in early March.  Imagine them underplanted with a drift of Daffodils, Dutch Crocus and Winter Hellebores.  If there is enough space, adding a few Star Magnolia will create a Spring confection to dream of during the grey Winter months!

Easy to grow

The Okame Cherry is hardy in zones 6 through 8 and adaptable to many soil conditions including our Northern Virginia clay soils.  It will benefit from deep irrigation during the hot, dry summer months and has no major pests or diseases which would be a major concern.

History

The Okame Cherry was bred in England by Captain Collingwood Ingram, a cherry collector and hybridizer.  It was selcected for its profuse blooming habit, color and cold hardiness.  In 1952 it received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.  In 1981, the Okame also received the Preliminary Commendation of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and was evaluated for the J. Franklin Styer Award for Exceptional Garden Merit.  In 1988 it completed the evaluation and was awarded the Gold Medal Plant Award.  For additional info on it click here.

Uses

The small stature makes it very uselful to be planted beside a patio or deck.  It has an upright oval shape when young and will reach 20 – 25′ tall.  It lends itself very well for use as a specimen tree on smaller properties.  In addition to the gorgeous flowers, it adds to the fall landscape when it’s leaves turn a nice red-orange color.

Philip & Cecilia busy at the Capital Home and Garden Show

Wanted to thank everyone that stopped by and spoke with us at the Capital Home and Garden Show.  We enjoyed the chance to visit with everyone.  

          The spring season that seems to be coming sooner than we all thought, out display was a nice tease of what is to come.

Many thanks to all those that complimented us on our display.  Favorites seemed to be the rich variety of flowering plants, from the sweetly fragrant Pink Dawn Viburnum to the Pink Forst Hellebores.  Many also enjoyed the bubbling boulder fountain and the twinkling fairy berries lights.

We hope to see many of you again.

This year our display promises to provide inspiration and ideas for creating your own exciting outdoor room for relaxing and entertaining.

A custom crafted pergola will be nestled under towering trees and surrounded by myriads of spring flowering plantings. Setting off the flowers, a rich tapestry of foliage plantings specifically chosen for their textural attributes will be featured.

Unusual water displays will offer soothing sounds and a welcome visual treat. There may even be a special secret garden space hidden within the design!

Our 90″ tree spade truck traveled out of state to Maryland this month for the Mid-Atlantic Nursery and Trade Show, The MANTS® Show. This is the largest nursery and landscape show in the area. It was at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Nursery and Landscape shows are always great.  We can put faces, names, and voices together with the people we have done business with. We have met many wonderful people over the many years we have been in business. We get to meet old friends, renewing relationships. We also get to meet a lot the new faces in the landscape and nursery industry. The landscape industry is a very dynamic industry. Over the last several years there has been a lot of changes. The trade show is best place to see what has happened over the last year and gives us an opportunity to prepare for the new season. Overall the mood was upbeat and positive

 

We are happy to report all the positive buzz of higher show attendance and there is excitement about the opportunities for the coming year.   Both are very good signs.  We are looking forward to what this coming year has to offer.
